INTRODUCING THE NEW
St. Peter Community Hospital
-Opened August 9, 2004
BELIEVE IT OR NOT
The
road to building the new St. Peter Community Hospital has taken
just under five years to complete. In 1999, the Hospital began looking
toward executing a new expansion and renovation at the current facility
or building a brand new facility on a completely new site. The movement
toward either option had to reflect the high quality of health care
already provided at St. Peter while creating opportunity for
future services. The hospital hired Yanik Companies as its project
manager to assist and guide it through the entire development, finance,
design and construction process.
After an extensive study based on objective data of both options,
the Hospital Board concluded a new facility would best meet the
health care needs of St. Peter and the surrounding communities.
A land search began and, shortly thereafter, design and space programming
for a new facility was initiated.
In 2001 and 2002, the site selection was finalized and building
programming and design was complete. The new site is large enough
to accommodate several hospital expansions. A campus master plan
was established to include a new medical clinic facility and a senior
community component on the site, providing for a full continuum
of senior care. The master plan permits all future expansions to
be directly connected to the new hospital, connecting the senior
housing at the north and the clinic facility to the west.
Construction on the new community hospital began in 2003.
The size of the hospital is 62,000 square feet. A welcoming community
conference room and the large physical therapy department were designed
directly to the left and right of the entrance for ease of patient
access and safety. Also located at the front entrance are the hospital
pharmacy and guest services.

UNIQUE FEATURES
The new hospital has a total
of 17 patient rooms. There are 10 private patient rooms, two special
care rooms, one isolation room, one hospice room and three LDRP rooms.
All 17 rooms are designed to actively promote healing through the
introduction of the Wellness room concept. The Minnesota Department
of Health worked closely with hospital management and the design team
to incorporate, for the first time ever in a Minnesota hospital,
the Wellness room concept of care. The new hospital features two surgery
suites. A uniquely designed inner center courtyard is situated between
the two large surgery suites and several in-patient rooms, allowing
natural light into the rooms and an area for patients and families
to enjoy. A large skylight has been designed at the main entrance
corridor and is considered the main intersection connection to
the future medical clinic and senior living community.
The new imaging department will make use of a new CT machine
and two radiology rooms. The lab for the hospital is located
directly adjacent to the imaging area. An outside docking area has
been designed to accommodate a mobile MRI transport. |

YANIK COMPANIES :AS PROJECT MANAGER
Yanik Companies assisted the hospital in several areas. Yanik provided
assistance in selection of the design team, space programming, land
research, financial consultation project management and construction
management service; during the various stages of the project.
I have never worked with a group that
had such a "can-do"attitude. Thank you for not getting tired
of us and for hanging in there as we continue to explore options for
the nursing home and clinic. This group has my deepest regard and
respect." - Colleen Spike,

INVOLVEMENT OF THE COMMUNITY
It was important to reflect and involve
the St. Peter community within the design and construction of the
new hospital. Yanik Companies is very proud that 75 percent of the
building trades that constructed the hospital were from St. Peter
and the surrounding community. The exterior of the building is a
native Kasota stone produced directly from a quarry in St. Peter.
The citizens of St. Peter unanimously supported and approved general
obligation bonds covering the full amount of the new hospital project.

WELLNESS ROOMS Created
to actively promote healing, the Wellness Room provides a comfortable,
relaxing environment for patients and families. It is designed to
make performance of beside tasks easier for both staff and patients.
The Wellness Rooms at St. Peter include designs for acute care,
hospice care, labor and delivery, and special care. The rooms themselves
are custom-designed and manufactured to promote healing and
patient safety, with custom furniture, lighted artwork on the walls
and ceiling and patient control features such as the ability to
turn reading lights on or off at the bedside. Molded bathroom components
are rounded for patient safety as are all corners within the room.
This design promotes ease of maintenance and maneuverability of
medical equipment. Every Wellness Room features an in-room nurses'
station and access to computerized patient information.

"St. Peter will be the first hospital
in Minnesota with Wellness Rooms, Colleen Spike, Hospital CEO, said.
"As soon as we experienced the Wellness Room, we felt a healing
sense of serenity. These rooms are truly unique. When a patient
walks into a Wellness Room, he will be impressed. This is definitely
not a typical hospital room."
