River's Edge Hospital & Clinic

St. Peter, MN

In 1999, River’s Edge Hospital (formerly St. Peter Community Hospital) began working toward executing an expansion and renovation to their existing hospital, or building an entirely new facility on a site within the city limits of St. Peter.  The decision needed to incorporate the high quality of healthcare already provided at the existing hospital, while creating opportunity for future patient care services.  The hospital hired Yanik as its project manager and owner’s representative to assist and guide them through the entire development, finance, design, and construction processes.

After an extensive facility study considering all available options, the hospital board concluded that a new facility would best meet the healthcare needs of St. Peter and the surrounding communities.  A land search and analysis began and, shortly thereafter, design and space programming for the facility was initiated.  A campus master plan was established for the 30 acres of land selected including space for a new medical clinic facility and a senior community care component, providing for a full continuum of healthcare and “one-stop” medical shopping.  The master plan permitted all of these components to be connected to the new hospital, as well as allowing for appropriate expansion for the hospital itself.

Construction on the new community hospital began in 2003.  A welcoming community conference room and large physical therapy department were designed directly off of the main hospital entrance, allowing for ease of community and patient access and safety.  The hospital pharmacy is conveniently located toward the main entrance as well.

The new hospital has a total of 17 patient rooms, which includes 10 private patient rooms, two special care rooms, one isolation room, a hospice room and three LDRP rooms.  All rooms are designed to actively promote healing through the introduction of the Wellness Environments™ room concept.  The Minnesota Department of Health worked closely with hospital management and the design team to incorporate, for the first time in a Minnesota hospital, the Wellness Environments™ concept of care.  The new hospital features two surgery suites with a uniquely designed inner center courtyard situated between the large surgery suites and several patient rooms, allowing natural light into the rooms.  A large skylight has been designed just beyond the main entrance and is considered the main intersection connecting the new medical office buildings to the west and new long term care facility to the northwest.

The new imaging department offers services including mammography, diagnostic, MRI, nuclear, CT scan, ultrasound, echocardiogram, carotid studies, and total body composition.

It was important to incorporate the St. Peter community within the design and construction of the new hospital.  Yanik is very proud that 75 percent of the building trades that worked on the new hospital were from St. Peter and the surrounding communities.  The citizens of St. Peter unanimously supported and approved general obligation bonds covering the full amount of the new hospital project cost.
